Can’t we all just get along?

September 27, 2009

I heard about this event and controversy from a student last week.

So, in an attempt to raise their spirits and inspire unity, thousands of Muslims gathered to pray at the Capitol Friday, which irked a bunch of Christians who decided to protest. Using bull horns. Nice touch. But here’s what gets me. According to this WaPo report, the Christians were yelling “Repent!”

Repent for what exactly? I wonder if those Christians realized that there is no concept of original sin in Islam. And did they really think they were going to win the hearts and minds of Muslims by shouting them down in public? The Post reports:

Across the street from the service, Christian protesters gathered with banners, crosses and anti-Islamic messages. One group, which stood next to a 10-foot-tall wooden cross and two giant wooden tablets depicting the Ten Commandments, was led by the Rev. Flip Benham of Concord, N.C.

“I would suggest you convert to Christ!” Benham shouted over a megaphone. Islam “forces its dogma down your throat.” A few Christian protesters gathered at the rear of the Muslim crowd, holding Bibles and praying.

For background on the event, the protests, etc., check out Fact Check’s rundown.

This was sad to see, as it reinforces the belief of many that all Christians are intolerant. It makes Christians look violent and hypocritical. I hope that the people who did this will realize that it wasn’t the right approach.
