Give the guy credit for trying (to live like Jesus)

October 7, 2009

A fascinating profile by Charles Honey with the Religion News Service on Pastor Ed Dobson who has written a book about his efforts to live like Jesus. Walking the walk, as they say, proved incredibly difficult from keeping kosher to giving money to beggars.

If you have the idea Dobson sets himself up as a role model of perfect piety, that’s not what he means. He says his Jesus year was a litany of mistakes and failures, whether botching his kosher diet with sour cream and chili or doing the right thing for the wrong reason.

“I don’t think I did everything right or had all the answers,” Dobson says in his disarmingly direct way. “But I did try as best I could to wrestle with Jesus’ teachings.”

Making it even more difficult is the fact that Dobson suffers from Lou Gehrig’s Disease. And he’s faced vicious criticism from Christian conservatives, according to Honey, for announcing that he voted for Obama. Dobson is a former megachurch pastor who once helped run the Moral Majority.  Check out his book The Year of Living Like Jesus: My Journey of Discovering What Jesus Would Really Do.
