Are Mormons welcome at Houston faith party?

June 8, 2011

Another thought on The Response, the seven-hour pray-and-fast-a-thon that Texas Gov. Rick Perry is organizing in Houston in a couple of months: Check out the faith statement, a list of seven beliefs that the event’s leaders uphold. They borrowed this from the ultra-conservative American Family Association, whose special projects include taking down offensive billboards and boycotting Home Depot.

Anyway, is the first statement of faith a slap at Mormons?

  1. We believe the Bible to be the inspired, the only infallible, authoritative Word of God.
In other words, the Book of Mormon is NOT authoritative. Is that what that sentence is meant to convey? Which would be a missed opportunity because Mormons would totally dig the AFA’s special projects (you know, like complaining about billboards that promote sex and home improvement stores that sponsor floats in gay pride parades.)
All of this anti-Mormon sentiment in conservative Christian circles is going to be very interesting to watch with Romney back in the mix for 2012.

And what about the Qurán? I like the way some people make these statements as if their strength in saying it makes it true.
